Barcelona is always mentioned if you ask people for their top 10 travel destinations in Europe. It’s not just the great location between sea and mountains, the historical old town or the masterpieces of Antoni Gaudí. Barcelona also offers the perfect combination of city break and beach holidays. You don’t even have to go the famous Costa Brava. Barcelonas wide and sandy city beach offers relaxation after a long day of sightseeing.
Very often people ask us when is the best time to go to Barcelona. The answer is easy. If you are flexible you should definitely consider the late summer weeks. The temperature in September is still around 25°. Not to hot to walk through the city, not too cold to spend time on the beach and in the sea.
We did a bit of research and found a very interesting Do-It-Yourself trip which we will present to you in this article. No worries, do-it-yourself doesn’t mean a lot of efforts. You only need to book flights and the hotel separately to get a fantastic price.
Direct flights from Malta plus 4 nights in a highly recommended centrally located hotel can be booked for less than €200 per person if you share the costs between 2 adults. We show you how to do it and save at least €250 compared to similar offers booked as a package.

You have questions or need help?
1. Book cheap flights to Barcelona from Malta
The Malta airport flight schedule for 2021 mentions two airlines offering direct flights to Barcelona. While Ryanair plans to start later this year Vueling already serves the route once or twice a week. The Spanish subsidiary of British Airways and Iberia attracts early bird customers with rates from €33 return.
Different from Ryanair you can still bring 1 carry-on luggage and 1 personal item for free when flying Vueling. But you will be asked to check-in the carry-on for free if you don’t pay a surcharge and book the basic rate. A downside are the flight times. Unfortunately Vueling schedules a lot of their flights over night or in the early morning hours. But as you can see in our example there a couple of days where you will find better departure times.
You can check-in more luggage for an extra fee and you can also pay for your seat reservation if you wish to be on the window or make sure to find seats together with your partner or family. We recommend to book your flights directly on the Vueling website. This makes it very easy in case of schedule changes or if you need to rebook your flight to another date.

2. Book a good-value priced hotel in Barcelona
It’s not an easy task to find a hotel in Barcelona which is centrally located, well-reviewed by other travellers, and is still affordable for most people. From our experience the Atlantis by Atbcn is the best match for these requirements. You will find it between the underground stops ‘Universitat’ and ‘Catalunya’ where a majority of Barcelonas public transport routes are connected. It also means that you can easily take a train or bus from the airport to the hotel.
The famous La Rambla and the historic city center Barri Gòtic are less than 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Most other attractions are easily to reach by a short underground trip. If you prefer the red hop-on hop-off buses you will find the main meeting point only 5 minutes from the hotel at the Plaça de Catalunya.
The hotel charges around €80 per night for a double room with ensuite bathroom in September. For the sample trip here you will have to pay €324 for 2, which means €162 per person if you share the costs. Breakfast comes with a surcharge. But due to the perfect location you will easily find restaurants, bars, coffee shops or bakeries around the hotel.
The hotel offers free cancellation at the moment. You are also able to pay when you check-in. So there is no risk to lose money by booking early.
