A lot of people call Sardinia the Caribbean island of Europe. It’s not just the turquoise clear water which can also be found here in Malta. It’s the mixture of green mountains and hills, long sandy beaches and of course the delicious fresh Italian food which makes Sardinia one of the top holiday destinations especially in summer.
Yes it’s true, Sardinia tends to be more pricy than Sicily or the Balearic Islands in Spain. And for people living in Malta it’s not easy to go there due to limited or even non-existing direct flights. But it doesn’t mean that it’s impossible or not affordable.
You will find a sample trip we researched over the last days to prove that even a whole week of beach holidays can be booked for less than €500 per person if you share a double room. We included flights with Alitalia and a really nice 4* hotel close to the beach and not far from Cagliari in the south of the island.
Just use our example as inspiration or template for your own research and planning. We included all details and booking links. As always you can also write us a message and we are happy to answer all open questions and support you through the booking process if necessary.
You have questions or need help?
1. Book cheap flights to Sardinia
Ryanair announced direct flights from Malta to Cagliari earlier this year. So far they were cancelled for departures in May and June. You can still book them from July on for prices as cheap as €35. But as they don’t show up in the official Malta airport summer schedule we expect that Ryanair will cancel them later.
The second option is Alitalia. They already fly daily from Malta to Rome where you easily connect to Cagliari. The prices start at €161 per person. You can chose between two different times on most days. Hand luggage and a personal item are included. But you need to pay more if you want to check-in bigger luggage.
You can check more dates and options in the flight search below.

2. Book a good-value priced hotel in Sardinia
If you decide to stay the whole week in the same hotel close to Cagliari we recommend to check the 4* Santa Gilla in Capoterra. It’s perfectly located next to a huge lagoon where flamingos can be seen very often. It’s just 5 minutes walk to the La Maddalena Spiaggia beach area if you prefer the sea over the hotel pool. You will also find lots of restaurants and bars there.
You don’t really need a rental car if you spend most of your time on the beach. There is a bus stop close to the hotel with regular departures to Cagliari. You can also arrange a day rental in case you want to see more of the beautiful island.

We found the best price for this hotel using the metasearch engine Trivago. You can book the hotel for only €84 per night in a double room including breakfast. There is a hotel fee of €4 per day on top which we added already. You will end up with €311 per person for a whole week in July.
The easiest way from Cagliari airport to the hotel is a taxi. It takes only 20 minutes and costs arounds €25. You can also order a shuttle service but it’s unlikely that you will save a lot of money if you are two or more persons. There is also a bus connection from the airport to Cagliari and from there to the hotel. But we can’t recommend this option carrying your luggage.
